Is Gold Plated Jewelry Worth Anything? GP, HGE and RGP Stamps Explained
You sort through a jewelry box and find a bracelet stamped “18K HGE” or a chain marked “14K GP.” It shines like gold. Then a buyer pushes it back across the counter. So is gold plated jewelry worth anything at all?
As metal, almost nothing. As jewelry, sometimes quite a bit. People ask this on Quora and on refining forums every week, usually after an estate sale haul. This guide explains what the stamps on gold plated jewelry mean, how much gold is really there and what to do with it in the US market.
Quick Answer: Is Gold Plated Jewelry Worth Anything?
- Gold plated jewelry has a film of gold over brass, copper or steel. The gold is usually well under 0.2% of the weight.
- Refiners report only about 0.1 to 1 gram of gold per pound of plated scrap.
- Pawn shops and gold buyers almost never pay for it.
- Stamps such as GP, GEP, HGE and RGP all mean the piece is not solid gold.
- The real value is resale: signed vintage costume jewelry, watches and wearable pieces.
- Gold filled is different. It holds far more gold and is worth pricing by weight.

What Gold Plating Is
Plating is done with electricity. The piece sits in a bath, and a very thin layer of gold bonds to the surface. How thin? The Federal Trade Commission’s Jewelry Guides set the minimums that the US trade works to.
| Term | Minimum gold layer | In plain words |
|---|---|---|
| Gold flash or gold washed | Under 7 millionths of an inch | Barely there |
| Gold electroplate (GEP) | 7 millionths of an inch | About 0.18 microns |
| Heavy gold electroplate (HGE) | 100 millionths of an inch | About 2.5 microns |
| Vermeil | About 2.5 microns over sterling silver | Gold on silver |
| Gold filled (for comparison) | 1/20 of the total weight | A real layer you can measure on a scale |
A human hair is around 70 microns thick. Even heavy plating is a small fraction of that. This is why gold plated jewelry has so little metal value.
How to Read the Stamps

The most confusing stamps are the ones with a karat in them. “18K HGE” does not mean the bracelet is 18K gold. It means the film on the surface is 18K gold. “24K GP” works the same way. If letters follow the karat, read the letters.
| Stamp | What it means | Solid gold? |
|---|---|---|
| 14K, 585, 18K, 750 | Karat gold all the way through | Yes |
| 14K GP, 18K GP, 24K GP | Gold plated | No |
| GEP, GE | Gold electroplate | No |
| HGE, HGP | Heavy gold electroplate | No |
| RGP, 1/40 10K RGP | Rolled gold plate | No, but more gold than plating |
| GF, 1/20 12K GF | Gold filled | No, but worth pricing |
| 925 with gold color | Vermeil, gold over sterling | No, but the silver has value |
Marks for solid gold are covered in our gold purity chart. If a piece has no stamp, use the checks in how to tell if gold is real and how to test gold at home.
How Much Gold Is in Gold Plated Jewelry?
Members of a gold refining forum have processed plated scrap by the pound for years. Their numbers are consistent. Low-grade plated items give roughly 0.1 to 0.25 grams of gold per pound. Medium to high-grade plated scrap gives about 1 gram per pound.

Turn that into money. On October 3, 2026, pure gold was $133.16 a gram.
| What you have | Gold inside | Gold value, Oct 3, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| One pound of low-grade plated jewelry | 0.1 to 0.25 g | $13 to $33 |
| One pound of heavy plated jewelry | About 1 g | About $133 |
| One 20 gram plated chain | 0.004 to 0.04 g | $0.50 to $5 |
| One pound of 1/20 12K gold filled | About 11.3 g | About $1,500 |
| One pound of solid 14K | 264.6 g | About $35,200 |
Those are theoretical values. Getting the gold out takes chemicals, equipment and time, and the cost is higher than the gold is worth on small amounts. One refiner on the forum quoted $1 for two ounces of plated and filled material. For a single chain, the gold in gold plated jewelry is worth cents.
Rolled gold plate is the exception
Rolled gold plate (RGP) is made like gold filled, with a bonded sheet instead of a film, just thinner. A gold dealer on Quora described sending 2 kilograms of rolled gold plate to a small refiner and getting back 32 grams of pure gold. That is 1.6%. At the price then it worked out to about $1 a gram of scrap. At the October 3, 2026 price, the same lot would be worth about $2.13 a gram. Our gold filled value guide has the formula for these marks.
Why Gold Buyers Say No
- The test fails. Acid or a file goes through the film to the base metal.
- There is nothing to weigh. Buyers pay on gold weight. Plating has almost none.
- Refining costs more than the gold. A buyer would lose money on it.
So if a pawn shop refuses your gold plated jewelry, the shop is not cheating you. If a shop offers a few dollars for a whole bag, that is about right as metal. What solid gold brings is a different story, covered in how much do pawn shops pay for gold.
Where Gold Plated Jewelry Does Have Value
Stop thinking about it as metal. A Quora answer on rolled gold made the point: if you can resell a piece, you will probably get more than by scrapping it, because art and antique value come into play.
- Signed vintage costume jewelry. Collectors look for maker names on the back or clasp. Well-known mid-century brands sell steadily online.
- Watches. A plated case on a good vintage movement can sell well.
- Designer fashion pieces. Brand matters more than metal.
- Clean, wearable everyday pieces. Sell in small lots.
- Vermeil. Stamped 925. The sterling silver underneath has scrap value even if the gold does not.
- Broken and worn pieces. Sell as a craft lot by the pound, or keep adding to a box until it is worth sending to a refiner that accepts plated scrap.

Gold Plated vs Gold Filled vs Solid Gold
| Gold plated | Gold filled | Solid gold | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it is made | Electroplated film | Bonded sheet of karat gold | Gold alloy throughout |
| Pure gold by weight | Under 0.2% | About 2% to 5% | 41.7% to 99.9% |
| Typical stamp | GP, GEP, HGE | 1/20 12K GF | 10K, 14K, 18K |
| Wears through | Quickly, in months or a few years | Slowly, over decades | Never |
| Sold by weight? | No | Sometimes, in larger lots | Yes |
| Best way to sell | As jewelry | Whole if vintage, or as scrap | By melt value or as jewelry |
If the sorting turns up real karat gold, work out what it is worth with the gold melt value calculator. The live price of 14K right now is $75.16 per gram, which shows how big the gap is.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Reading “18K HGE” or “14K GP” as solid gold.
- Paying solid gold prices for gold plated jewelry at a flea market or online.
- Throwing out a signed vintage piece because a gold buyer refused it.
- Mixing plated items into a lot of solid gold. It slows the sale and annoys the buyer.
- Trying home chemical recovery. The acids are dangerous and the gold is worth less than the supplies.
- Missing the gold filled pieces in the pile. Those are worth separating.

As scrap metal, almost nothing. Gold plated jewelry usually holds well under 0.2% gold by weight. Its value is as wearable or collectible jewelry.
How much gold is in gold plated jewelry?
Refiners report about 0.1 to 1 gram of gold per pound of plated scrap. A single chain holds a few cents to a few dollars of gold.
What does HGE mean on jewelry?
HGE means heavy gold electroplate. The gold layer is at least 100 millionths of an inch thick. The piece is not solid gold.
What does 18K GP mean?
It means the piece is plated with 18 karat gold. The base metal underneath is not gold.
Do pawn shops buy gold plated jewelry?
Almost never as gold. Some will buy a nice piece as costume jewelry for a small amount.
Is gold plated the same as gold filled?
No. Gold filled has a bonded layer of karat gold that is at least 1/20 of the weight. It contains many times more gold than plating.
Is vermeil worth anything?
Yes, mostly for its sterling silver. Vermeil is gold over 925 silver, and the silver has scrap value.
How can I tell if my jewelry is plated or solid gold?
Check the stamp for letters such as GP, GEP, HGE or RGP, look for a different color at worn edges, and have a buyer test it.
Conclusion
Gold plated jewelry is not worth much as gold. The film is too thin, and no buyer pays by weight for it. That does not make it worthless. A good vintage piece, a signed brooch or a clean chain can sell for real money as jewelry.
Read the stamps, pull out anything solid or gold filled, and sell the rest for what it is. You will do far better than the few cents of gold inside it.
