Gold Filled Value: Is Gold Filled Jewelry Worth Anything?
You flip over a locket or an old watch case and see “1/20 12K GF.” It looks like gold. It feels like gold. So what is the gold filled value of the thing in your hand?
This comes up all the time on treasure-hunting and gold refining forums, usually after someone buys a tray of “gold” jewelry at a garage sale. The short version: gold filled is not solid gold, but it is not junk either. With gold above $4,000 an ounce, the math has changed a lot. This guide shows how to work out the gold filled value of any piece and what US buyers actually pay.
Quick Answer: What Is the Gold Filled Value of Your Jewelry?
- Gold filled jewelry has a thick layer of real karat gold bonded to a brass core.
- 1/20 12K GF means 5% of the item’s weight is 12K gold. That is 2.5% pure gold.
- At today’s live price, the pure gold in a 21.2 gram 1/20 12K bracelet is worth about $68.46.
- Buyers who take gold filled usually pay around 60% to 65% of that theoretical number, and many shops will not buy small amounts at all.
- Vintage pieces in good shape often sell for more whole than as scrap.

What “Gold Filled” Actually Means
Gold filled is a sheet of karat gold bonded under heat and pressure to a base metal, usually brass. The gold layer is on the outside. The inside is not gold.
In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission’s Jewelry Guides say an item sold as “gold filled” should have a gold layer that is at least 1/20 of the total weight of the metal. If the layer is thinner, the item is called rolled gold plate, and the fraction is shown, such as 1/30 or 1/40.
That 1/20 is the whole story of gold filled value. It is about 100 times more gold than ordinary plating, and about one twentieth of what a solid piece of the same karat would hold.

How to Read Gold Filled Stamps
| Stamp | Meaning | Pure gold by weight |
|---|---|---|
| 1/20 12K GF | 1/20 of the weight is 12K gold | 2.5% |
| 1/20 14K GF or 14/20 | 1/20 of the weight is 14K gold | 2.9% |
| 1/20 10K GF | 1/20 of the weight is 10K gold | 2.1% |
| 1/10 12K GF | 1/10 of the weight is 12K gold | 5.0% |
| 1/30 10K RGP | Rolled gold plate, 1/30 is 10K gold | 1.4% |
| 1/40 10K RGP | Rolled gold plate, 1/40 is 10K gold | 1.0% |
| GP, GEP, HGE | Gold plated or electroplated | Trace amounts |

If the stamp has only a karat and nothing else, such as “14K,” you may have solid gold. Check it with our guide on how to tell if gold is real before you price it as gold filled.
How to Calculate Gold Filled Value
The formula for gold filled value has one more step than solid gold.
Pure gold = weight × fraction × (karat ÷ 24)
In March 2017, a forum member bought a bracelet for $1. It weighed 21.2 grams and was stamped 1/20 12K. Other members walked through the math, and it is a perfect example.

So that $1 bracelet holds about 0.53 grams of pure gold. At today’s live price that gold is worth $68.46. On October 3, 2026, with gold at $133.16 a gram, it came to about $70.
Gold filled value per gram
It is easier to think per gram of jewelry. These are theoretical values on October 3, 2026, before any buyer discount.
| Type | Pure gold in 1 gram | Theoretical value per gram |
|---|---|---|
| 1/10 12K gold filled | 0.050 g | About $6.66 |
| 1/20 14K gold filled | 0.029 g | About $3.88 |
| 1/20 12K gold filled | 0.025 g | About $3.33 |
| 1/20 10K gold filled | 0.021 g | About $2.77 |
| 1/30 10K rolled gold plate | 0.014 g | About $1.85 |
Back in 2017, forum members used a rule of thumb of “$1 per gram” for gold filled. Gold was near $40 a gram then. The rule was right for its time. At more than three times that gold price, the same piece is worth more than three times as much.
What Buyers Really Pay for Gold Filled
Theory is one thing. Getting paid is another. Three things pull the real gold filled value down.
- Wear. The gold is only on the surface. Decades of rubbing remove some of it.
- Refining cost. A refiner has to dissolve a lot of brass to reach a little gold.
- Small lots. Many pawn shops and gold buyers refuse gold filled completely.
| When | What happened | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Oct 2010 | Collector sent 500 g of gold filled to a refinery | Got $349 against an expected $556, about 63% |
| Forum advice | What dealers pay for gold filled lots | About 60% to 65% of calculated gold value |
| Forum report | 33.7 g of gold filled eyeglass frames refined at home | 1.5 g of gold recovered, about 4.5% |
| Quora, 2023 | Seller sent 2 kg of rolled gold plate to a small refiner | 32 g of pure gold back, about 1.6% |
| Forum report | Commercial refiner quoted on 2 ounces of gold filled | Offered $1 in total |
The collector in the first row had paid about 25 cents a gram at yard sales, so he still more than doubled his money. He put the shortfall down to wear on older pieces and uneven manufacturing. The last row shows the other side: a small lot is not worth a big refiner’s time.
Here is a fair way to set your expectations. Work out the theoretical gold filled value, then take about 60% of it for a clean lot, and less for heavily worn pieces. For a pound of mixed 1/20 12K, that is still real money at 2026 prices.
Sell It as Scrap or Sell It Whole?
Often the best gold filled value has nothing to do with melting.
- Vintage watches and pocket watch cases. Collectors pay for brand and condition.
- Lockets, bangles and pens. Victorian and Art Deco pieces sell well online.
- Signed costume jewelry. Known makers bring more than the gold inside.
- Eyeglass frames and watch bands. These are scrap. Old flexible watch bands often have gold filled caps.
- Broken chains and single earrings. Scrap. Save them until you have a larger lot.
A forum member made this point in 2017: intact, good-quality gold filled jewelry can bring more than melt value when gold prices are high, because people would rather wear it than buy solid gold. If you decide to scrap, our guide on how to sell scrap gold explains how refiners and mail-in buyers work.
Gold Filled vs Gold Plated vs Solid Gold
| Solid gold | Gold filled | Gold plated | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold content | 41.7% to 99.9% | About 2% to 5% | Under 0.2% |
| Typical stamp | 10K, 14K, 18K, 585, 750 | 1/20 12K GF | GP, GEP, HGE |
| Wears through? | No | After many years | Yes, quickly |
| Scrap buyers | All of them | Some, in larger lots | Almost none |
| How to value | Melt value | Formula above, then about 60% | Resale as jewelry only |
For solid pieces, use the gold melt value calculator. For the percentages behind each karat, see our gold purity chart.
Mistakes to Avoid With Gold Filled
- Pricing it like solid gold because the stamp includes “12K” or “14K.”
- Throwing it away because one shop said it is worthless.
- Mixing gold filled with solid gold when you sell. Keep them apart.
- Scrapping a collectible watch or locket for its gold.
- Sending a tiny lot to a refiner with a minimum fee.
- Forgetting that wear lowers gold filled value. Brass showing through means gold is gone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is gold filled jewelry worth anything?
Yes. Gold filled jewelry contains real karat gold, usually 2% to 5% pure gold by weight. It is worth far less than solid gold but far more than gold plated items.
What does 1/20 12K GF mean?
It means 1/20 of the item’s weight is 12K gold. Since 12K is half pure gold, the item is about 2.5% pure gold by weight.
How do I calculate gold filled value?
Multiply the weight by the fraction on the stamp, then by the karat divided by 24, then by the gold price per gram. Buyers usually pay around 60% of that result.
How much is gold filled worth per gram?
On October 3, 2026, 1/20 12K gold filled had a theoretical value of about $3.33 per gram and 1/10 12K about $6.66 per gram. Real offers are lower because of wear and refining costs.
Do pawn shops buy gold filled jewelry?
Most do not, or they pay very little. Refiners and some mail-in buyers take gold filled in larger lots. Good vintage pieces sell better to collectors.
Is gold filled better than gold plated?
Yes. Gold filled has roughly 100 times more gold than standard plating and lasts for decades. Gold plated items have almost no scrap value.
Is rolled gold plate the same as gold filled?
It is made the same way, but the gold layer is thinner than 1/20 of the weight. Stamps such as 1/30 10K RGP show the fraction.
Should I scrap gold filled or sell it whole?
Sell wearable vintage pieces whole. Scrap broken chains, frames and watch bands, and wait until you have a larger lot.
Conclusion
The gold filled value of a piece comes down to three numbers on a scale and a stamp: the weight, the fraction and the karat. A 1/20 12K item is 2.5% pure gold, and at 2026 prices that is worth counting.
Do the math, expect about 60% of it from a buyer, and look hard at whether the piece is worth more as jewelry than as metal. Either way, do not let anyone tell you it is worth nothing.
